Sharing solutions to fight the opioid epidemic

Congress is moving toward completing legislation representing a significant step forward in bringing much-needed support to individuals and families around the country who are affected by the opioid epidemic.

With those individuals and families in mind—and based on evidence demonstrating what works—the Blue Cross Blue Shield System is proposing constructive solutions for policymakers at all levels of government as they craft a final bill. These strategies and the compelling reasons to implement them are outlined in a newly released paper “Addressing the Opioid Crisis: Preventing Abuse and Ensuring Patients Receive the Right Care in the Right Setting.”

Despite efforts to slow the opioid epidemic, the crisis persists. Many people–particularly in rural areas of the country–are still suffering from opioid abuse and need care. But care is not always available or appropriate and resources aren’t always distributed in the most efficient way.

Given these challenges, a comprehensive strategy that ensures patients receive the care they need at the right time and in the right setting while also addressing systemic fraud and abuse in the system, is critical. Resources should be allocated appropriately to states that have been most affected by the epidemic.

Read the recommendations and how BCBS companies are working with community groups, medical professionals, pharmacists and others to reduce improper opioid use as well as provide for those who need care, support and recovery.
