Chronic conditions are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States. With 90 percent of every health care dollar spent treating people with chronic conditions, they are also one of the leading drivers of the nation’s health care costs. The good news is that avoiding unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as changing lifestyle behaviors including increasing physical activity and improving nutrition, may prevent or reverse chronic conditions.
